What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a powerful tool for accessing the subconscious mind and achieving personal goals or affecting desired changes. It may be used alone or in conjunction with other therapeutic techniques.

Hypnosis is not sleep, unconsciousness, mind control or even magic. In fact, it is a heightened state of awareness.   The person is fully aware, in control and able to respond to requests, either verbally or by a signal.  Ask a hypnotized person to make a specific, reasonable movement, he/she will comply.

Myth:  Hypnosis is like a spell that is cast over a helpless, passive and detached recipient.

Truth:  Hypnosis requires active, conscious participation on the part of the client.

Myth:  Hypnosis takes control away from the client.

Truth:  The client is always in control and in a position of choice in the process.

Myth:  You will be asleep and will not remember what takes place under hypnosis.

Truth:  You will be relaxed and comfortable but conscious and alert.

Myth:  Hypnosis only works if you are gullible and have less than average intelligence.

Truth:  Hypnosis works best with normal to bright people who are interested in learning and have access to their imagination.

Myth:  Under hypnosis, you are vulnerable to do anything, good or bad. You are like a slave who obeys his or her master (the hypnotist) automatically, irrespective of what you are told to do.

Truth:  Under hypnosis, a person will not do anything contrary to their moral principles.  They will retain the power to select only the suggestions they are willing to accept and act on.

Myth:  A person in a hypnotic state may not be easily awakened and may remain in that state for a long time.

Truth:  The hypnotic state is similar to becoming completely absorbed in a movie or book.  In other words, it represents a concentration of attention.

Myths and Misconceptions About Hypnosis

There is no surrender of control or power, no magic.  NO ONE can be hypnotized against his or her will; or made to do anything he or she does not want to do.

The American Medical Association and the American Psychiatric Association has approved hypnotherapy for use by professionally trained individuals.

What your mind causes, your mind can correct. Wellness begins in your mind.  Every problem has a cause, and when you eliminate the cause from the subconscious mind, the problem will disappear.
